Oklahoma City, the largest city in the Great Plains on this trip with a population of around 680,000, is the capital of the state of Oklahoma. The city became historically known through the first Oklahoma Land Run in 1889. The Land Runs marked the end of the American pioneer era, as the so-called “Wild West” was finally settled.
In April 1995 the city became scene of a bomb attack that killed 168 people. It was the worst terrorist attack in US history prior to the attacks on September 11, 2001.
