Calgary and Edmonton to the west are more than 1,300 km away, while the distance to Toronto and Montréal in the east is even more than 2,000 km. The heart of Manitoba’s capital is The Forks at the confluence of the Assiniboine River and the Red River, where people have settled and traded for more than 6,000 years. The Red River Floodway is a 47-km-long canal that circles the city to the east, protecting it from previously devastating floods.
