Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the only national park in North Dakota; access to the North Unit is on US 85, the South Unit can be reached via the small town of Medora on Interstate 94. There are numerous prairie dog towns in the landscape shaped by erosion – the so-called Badlands; sometimes you can get as close as two meters to the cute animals without them disappearing into their burrows. Especially in the southern part of the park, herds of bison roam through the prairie and, much to the delight of tourists, cross the scenic loop drive.
