Dale Chihuly

USA

* September 20, 1941 Tacoma (WA)

Dale Chihuly is probably the most famous and influential glass artist in the world. He has completely reinterpreted the traditional technique of glass blowing, using his experimental approach to create shapes and structures such as flowers and sea creatures that are reminiscent of nature. His monumental glass installations are usually brightly colored and have an impressive, fast-flowing dynamic. His works can be found in botanical gardens, museums and hotels.

Chihuly’s home town of Tacoma is home to the Museum of Glass, a center for contemporary glass art in which the artist plays a central role. The Bridge of Glass connects the Museum to downtown Tacoma, and nearby historic Union Station houses some of the artist’s most notable glass installations.

The Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle is a museum dedicated exclusively to the artist’s work. The museum offers visitors the opportunity to experience numerous of Chihuly’s works in a specially designed space that also includes the garden area. It shows the whole range of his work, from smaller, delicate glass objects to a 30 m long sculpture located in the Glasshouse, the heart of the museum.
