* June 16, 1935 Cincinnati (OH)

Although Jim Dine’s art is often classified as Pop Art, he has always evaded being assigned to a particular style. Rather, it is his personal experiences and feelings as well as an intensive process of autobiographical reflection that characterize his art. This also explains why everyday objects as diverse as Pinocchio figures, hearts, bathrobes and tools are among the recurring motifs in his paintings and sculptures.

Dine likes to combine his passion for tools – his parents ran a hardware store in his hometown of Cincinnati – with his affinity for antiquity, more specifically for Greco-Roman culture and its figures and sculptures. This results in new works of art for the viewer that appear bizarre or even disturbing at first glance.
