Flanagan, Barry

Wales

* January 11, 1941 Prestatyn

† August 31, 2009 Santa Eulària des Riu

The Welsh sculptor Barry Flanagan became known for a variety of bronze sculptures and drawings based on one motif – the hare. He makes his hares jump over a bell or other objects with their legs stretched out, and has them perform acrobatic gymnastics, boxing or drumming. Or, for example, he replaces Rodin’s Thinker sitting on a stone with a hare. And when he gets completely exuberant, his protagonist climbs skyscrapers or dances on the Empire State Building. But all these characters have one thing in common; they are instantly recognizable as works of art by Barry Flanagan.
