Per Kirkeby was a Danish painter, sculptor and architect and was considered the most important representative of Danish contemporary art. In his home country of Denmark, he is best known for his abstract, large-format paintings. “I also think that I’m a really good painter,” he once said about himself. His works have been shown at the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others.
Kirkeby taught in Karlsruhe and Frankfurt and took part in Documenta 7 and IX, among others. He became internationally known for his brick sculptures in public spaces in Germany; many of these sculptures are so large that they can be easily walked on.
