Snelson, Kenneth

Kenneth Snelson

USA

* 29. Juni 1927 Pendleton (OR)

† 22. Dezember 2016

Like his teacher Buckminster Fuller, Kenneth Snelson worked with tensegrity, an artificial word made up of the English terms tension and integrity. His filigree sculptures based on this principle form a stable structure in which rigid tubes and rods (usually made of stainless steel) do not touch each other, but are only connected by flexible tension elements such as ropes and cables. The stability of the works is guaranteed only by the tension between the elements.
