The French sculptor Bernar Venet is best known for his monumental outdoor sculptures; his works made of bent square steel in the form of straight lines, arches and indeterminate lines are part of the public art scene in many cities. The “Arcs“, arches made of rust-red Corten steel lined up next to each other, are among his most famous works of art. The Arc Majeur, which was installed to the right and left of the motorway in Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, Belgium, is one of the tallest sculptures in Europe at 60 m high.

The pure geometric form – in this case the arch – is the only content in Venet’s works. His sculptures, which often bear mathematical data such as degrees as their titles, do not allow much room for interpretation and tell no stories. This is also evident in the “Points” series, in which the artworks look like sawn-off tree stumps from the distance. On closer inspection, you can read the word “POINT” on the top; in Bernar Venet’s world of art, they are simply points.
