In order to make little Fogo Island more attractive to tourists, the Norwegian architect Todd Saunders was commissioned at the beginning of the 21st century to build six distinctively shaped artists’ studios at different spots around the island’s coastline; four studios have been completed by now.
All studios are self-sufficient units, independent of the community’s water and electricity supply. Electricity is generated by photovoltaic panels placed on stands next to the houses.
Fogo Island Studios and Inn
There are no conventional toilets, sinks or showers; before each stay, people must bring their own water supplies. All studios are equipped with an electrically operated composting toilet that works without water. In winter, a small black stove, set up in each studio and fired with wood, provides the necessary heat. The studios are available for young artists who can to live and work here for one year.
The Fogo Island Inn, also built by Todd Saunders and perched high on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, opened in 2013 and is a very special luxury hotel. It is run by a foundation and provides employment and a good income for many of the island’s residents. The price for an overnight stay in one of the 29 rooms is between 2,000 and 3,000 Dollars; however, the coffee in the small bar is affordable even for us as tourists.
