Sault Ste. Marie was divided into two towns of the same name as a result of the British-American War in 1812; today the huge International Bridge runs between the two cities. The Saint Marys River, which begins here, connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron.

With up to 10,000 ships per year the facility is – in terms of tonnage – the busiest lock in the world. The lock facility is currently undergoing a multi-billion-dollar expansion that will last until about 2030 to allow faster handling of the increasingly larger cargo and container ships.
Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, Canada, is considerably more attractive than its counterpart on the American side. A beautifully designed boardwalk begins at Roberta Bondar Park, named after Canada’s first female astronaut, and extends to the Canal National Historic Site. The lock canal on the Canadian side, however, is now only used for tourist boats.
The little St. Mary’s Island and Whitefish Island are two small nature reserves just outside the city; the large bridge in the distance is almost always visible. Also worth a trip is Bellevue Park, which can be explored best by bicycle; the Saint Marys River is always in sight.
