Southern California and Arizona are rich in historic national monuments. Some of the historic buildings are carved into rock faces, while others are on the plains or on stony hills. The landscape around these sites is characterized by various species of cacti, which now and then add a little color to the endless and monotonous expanse of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts.
