Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city; around 62 percent of the residents are colored. At the end of the last century, the harbor was converted at a cost of billions into a modern recreational area with parks, the Maryland Science Center, the architecturally impressive National Aquarium, the American Visionary Art Museum and the Top of the World Tower; today the Inner Harbor is the city’s main attraction. The largest employer in town is Johns Hopkins University.

Just outside, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine tells all about the successful battle of 1814 and the origin of the American national anthem.
