Buffalo (NY)

Buffalo, New York, is the last of the industrial cities in the Rust Belt on our journey around the Great Lakes – from here it’s just a hop back to Ontario. 115 meters tall, the Art Deco-style City Hall is one of the tallest public buildings in the United States. A photo together with Shark Girl, controversial mascot and social media star since 2014 at the newly designed Canalside, should not be missed.

A bronze plaque in the Erie Basin Marina might be of interest to German tourists; it honors Captain John Maynard from the famous poem by Theodor Fontane (“…and still 15 minutes to Buffalo”). Friends of Frank Lloyd Wright will find two of the architect’s well-known houses in the city; Graycliff just outside and the Martin House. After all, Buffalo is known for its more than 180 parks; many of them were once created by landscape gardener Frederick Law Olmsted. Among the museums, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is famous for many outstanding exhibits.
