Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States and has the most famous buildings in the country, the White House and the Capitol. The city is just incredible: hundreds of statues, monuments and memorials in huge parks alternate with top-class museums, most of which are free to visitors. The heart of the city, the NationalMall, stretches from the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world, to the massive Lincoln Memorial on the Potomac River, which also forms the border with the state of Virginia.

Anyone familiar with large American cities will quickly notice a special feature: There are no skyscrapers in Washington because no building may be higher than the width of the adjacent street plus 6.1 meters. However, three structures do not fall under this regulation because they already existed or were in stage of planning before the law went into effect: The WashingtonMonument, the Old Post Office tower, and the Washington National Cathedral.
As a visitor, if time permits, you should definitely check out some of the city’s neighborhoods; recommended are the suburb of Shaw with its African-American history, Georgetown on the C&O Canal, The Wharf, ultra-modern nightlife district on the waterfront, Columbia Heights, Anacostia with its giant chair, or Capitol Hill, the city’s shopping district.
